A 40-minute drive from the hotel is the village of Cleggan, where you can get a boat to the beautiful island of Inishbofin. Inishbofin is a charming island located off the coast of Connemara in County Galway, Ireland. Its name, derived from the Irish "Inis Bó Finne," means "Island of the White Cow". The island spans approximately 12 square kilometers and has around 180 residents.
Inishbofin boasts a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Iron Age. Saint Colmán founded a monastery on the island around 665 AD, which was later attacked by Vikings in 795. The island has seen various rulers, including the O'Flahertys and the O'Malleys. A notable historical site is the Cromwellian fort, built on Port Island by a Spanish pirate or Barbary corsair named Alonzo Bosco in the 16th century.
The island is renowned for its stunning landscapes, including white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rugged cliffs. Much of Inishbofin is designated a Special Area of Conservation due to its unique flora and fauna, such as corn crakes and seals. The absence of trees adds to its distinctive character, with the salt-enriched air preventing their re-establishment.
